Spa wraps are great gift ideas or bazaar items, too.

Sew spa wraps for all the men, women and children in your family. Everyone needs one. Use for after the shower, bath, or when you do your hair or at the spa or pool or the beach.

Spa wraps have elasticized tops that can be worn above the bust or at the waist.

Sewing a spa wrap is a quick and easy sewing project. All you need is a beach towel, approximately 1-1/4 yards of 1 inch to 1-1/4 inch wide sport sew through elastic and about 6 inches of hook and loop tape or large snaps.

Here is the how to sew instructions.

First of all, make a decision about what you want to use to sew the spa wrap. Colorful beach towels are great to use as well as fabric. Your choice may be based on what size you need the spa wrap to be.

Smaller towels work well for small children.

Lighter weight towels work better than heavier ones. They aren't as bulky to sew or wear and also dry faster.

Sewing Tip: Always preshrink all fabrics including towels before you sew.

The average beach towel is about 62 inches long x 34 inches wide. Find some good bargains at your local flea market.

The length of the beach towel will generally go around most bodies with some over lap. If you need more, sew 2 towels together or add half a towel.

Cut a piece of 1 inch to 1-1/4 inch wide sturdy sport sew through elastic to be about 2/3 of the length of the towel or fabric that you are using. This depends on the stretch of the elastic.

Example: For a 62 inch long towel, cut the elastic about42 inches long.

Divide the towel and the elastic into eighths. First fold in half, then again in fourths, then again in eighths. These smaller sections are easier to handle at the sewing machine.

Pin the elastic at the eighth marks to one long edge on the wrong side of the towel.

Set your sewing machine for your largest and longest zigzag stitch.

As you stitch, stretch the elastic to fit each pinned section of the towel.

First stitch along the outer edge of the elastic and then go back and stitch along the inner edge of the elastic also stretching as you sew.

If you prefer, you can sew a lightweight fabric casing to the wrong side of the towel and insert the elastic drawing it up to fit the size you want.

Cut two strips of hook and loop tape about 3" long.

Pin the rough (hook) side of one strip to the inside edge of the overlap on top of the elastic.

Stitch around the hook tape to hold securely.

Pin the soft (loop) side of one strip to the outside edge on the right side of the underlap.

Stitch around that tape.

Now place the corresponding pieces of hook and loop tape up against the stitched in place pieces of tape.

Put the wrap on your body to help determine where to sew the corresponding pieces of tape.

Pin those pieces where they should go and unhook them from the stitched tapes. Remove the wrap.

Stitch around these tapes where you have them pinned.

WOW! You just made a spa wrap!

Now, for some designer touches, try these ideas:

Add a large pocket cut from contrasting or matching fabric or even mesh fabric on the front.

Monogram or use one of your embroidery designs on the pocket before applying it to the wrap.

You could bind the outer edges of towel with fabric to match the pocket.

If you decide to bind the outer edges of the towel, round the square corners first. It looks better and is easier to bind. See the following sewing tip to make a nice curve.

Sewing Tip: Lay a dinner plate down at the corners of the towel lining up the edges of the plate with the edges of the towel. Draw the outer curve of the plate to get a very nice even curve.

If you are using a plain towel, add a fun embroidery design using instructions to embroider on terry cloth to decorate your wrap.

Applique a unique design on the spa wrap.

If you prefer not to use hook and loop tape, use very large snaps or heavy duty gripper snaps to hold the wrap closed.

Draw triangle shapes about 3 inches tall and 2 inches wide on the cardboard. Cut out the ears. Cover with felt using hot glue. If you use dark brown or black as your turtleneck and legging color then you can use a basic tortoiseshell or black headband. If not, then cover the headband with the same color felt as your cat ears. Glue the ears to the headband. You can easily make a cat tail by using a long piece of fabric rolled into a long tube and filled with stuffing and then hot glued at the seam. You can pin the tail on the legging seat or attach with Velcro for safety.

You can either make your cat a 'skinny' kitty with just the turtleneck and leggings, or you can add a sweatshirt in an accent color to give some added depth and warmth to the costume and your child while outside. A cute idea if using a sweatshirt is to take some fabric paints or paint pens and write cute little sayings on the shirt in whimsical lettering. Write things like 'meeoow' or 'Happy Meow-o-leen' etc. You can also draw little mouse shapes and cat paw prints. Finish your child's easy cat costume by painting a simple cat face on your child's face. Use our face paint recipe to create a cat nose, mouth outline and whiskers. If you want you can cover your child's face with a light base coat and then paint the details on. Have a medium and a small liner paint brush for different size details.

Easy Halloween Face Paint Recipe

1/2 tsp cold cream

1/2 cup

1/2 tsp water

Different colors of food coloring

Mix cornstarch, cold cream, water, and enough drops of food coloring to make the color vivid in a cup. If you're making several different colors then have more cups available. Stir well and add more cornstarch if too runny.

Using a cloth diaper is not complicated either. How you actually use them depends on their construction. Cloth diapers too can have Velcro hooks attacked too to them, but many have diaper pins that are used to keep it fastened.

Steps to Clothe Your Newborn Baby After Diapering

After you have changed their diapers, the next step is to put on clothes. If it is a bodysuit that you have chosen for the baby, you should keep the suit flat on the surface by the side, and then lift and place the baby on the suit. Then wrap the one-piece and snap or zip them from ankle to neck, or as applicable.

For a two-piece outfit, you need to pt the top on first. As discussed, choose tops that do not cover the head and face of your baby for long. For a shirt, you can lay the baby on top of it too, and put one arm at a time, and snap it shut. After that you can put on the bottoms on the baby. As with adults, you do that one leg at a time, except here you have to bunch up the pants leg, and pull it over the baby's leg. Then do the same with the other leg. Gently lift the baby and slide the pant over their diapers.

After putting the top and bottom, you can put on any more layers, as required by season or weather. If you want, you can put on hats and crib shoes on the baby for extra comfort, and are ready to go!

Gender stereotyping starts even before a child is born. As friends and family buy gifts for an upcoming birth, color choices are often limited to pale green or yellow if the baby's gender is to be a surprise. If the baby's sex is known, or after the child is born, pale pinks and small flowers adorn newborn girls' clothing, while light blue with trucks and sports insignia adorn newborn boys' clothes.

How we started the potty training process

Diaper Changing Tips and Avoiding the "Magic Pee"

This article is designed to help those who've never changed a disposable diaper before, or think they're doing something wrong.

Step 1. Gather all necessary items before starting. You'll need: clean diaper, baby wipes, baby powder, cream for rashes, and a disposable bag.

Step 2. Wash your hands.

Step 3. Cover changing area with cloth or waterproof blanket.

Step 4. Place baby on changing table and secure him, or on designated area. Do not place on counter he can roll off of.

Step 5. Fully remove child's pants or anything that may get in the way of diaper changing process.

Step 6. Unfold clean diaper, sliding tabbed portion underneath the child. The front of the diaper, generally with little pictures on the top, should be face down.

Step 7. Open tabs on dirty diaper and fold down. Do not remove yet. If child is a boy, cover penis with baby wipe or cloth to avoid spraying.

Step 8. Hold baby's legs up with one hand. Wipe the baby's bottom clean. If it's a girl, make sure you always wipe front to back. If it's a boy, be sure to clean all around the scrotum. Put used wipes in the dirty diaper, use as many as you need until wipe comes away clean.

Step 9. Pull soiled diaper out, fold and secure tabs. Put it in the disposable bag.

Step 10. Apply powder to bottom. If there is a rash, let it air dry or pat dry with a cloth before applying cream. Do not put powder on rash.

Step 11. Fold front of clean diaper up and secure tabs. Diaper should be snug without pinching. Make sure side ruffles are out, not in, to prevent leakage down the legs. If this is a newborn baby with umbilical cord, fold the diaper down to just below cord.

Congratulations! You have changed a diaper.

One last helpful tip. Have you experienced the "magic pee" with your baby boy, where the diaper is dry, but his clothes are wet?

Here's the thing you need to watch for: Make sure the boy's penis is pointing down when putting on diaper. This is something I wish I knew when I first started changing diapers. If he is pointing up or to the side, his pee will shoot right out of the diaper. Remembering this will prevent many clothes and bedding changes.

• Try to gradually phase out nappies as some children hate change and this may cause them to regress in their toilet training progress.

• Try to give your toddler as much privacy when using the toilet as possible as some kids won't use the loo if someone is watching.

• Make the bathroom environment as welcoming as possible by putting in some of your little one's favourite toys and maybe even a book or too next to the loo.

• Try making up a li'l tune aka "Look Who's Talking" and sing it every time your child goes to the toilet successfully. Include generous praise and compliments in the song so that your tot knows they are doing something good.

• Put some food dye into the toilet so your child can enjoy watching it change colour after using the loo. This tip is a huge hit with tots!

• Give surprise treats, lollies and gifts to your toddler after using the bathroom. This positive reinforcement will encourage the use of the toilet.

• Create a bit of buzz around flushing the lavatory and make this your child's special job. In order for this to work, you should try to make your child understand that they can only flush the loo once they have used it.

Pumpkin

Start with a large orange sweatshirt. Cut eyes and a mouth shape out of
black or yellow felt and glue them on the front of the shirt. Put the shirt
on your child, fold up the sleeves, then stuff the belly and back area with
newspapers or quilt batting to make it look nice and round like a pumpkin.
Top it all of with a green cap. You can even cut some leaf shapes out of
green felt and glue them to the top of the cap.

Dwarf

Start with earth tone pants and shirt. Brown and dark greens work well. Put
your child in some boots as well. Make a simple hat out of felt, similar to
a witch's hat but with a smaller brim. Finish the outfit with some gardening

treating.

Sunflower

Dress your child in a green shirt and pants. For smaller children,
especially those in colder climates, a one piece pajama-type outfit with
feet works well. For the flower part, start with a brown hat or cap. Cut

you'd like you can cut two large leaf shapes out of green felt and glue them

The good news is that there are many ways to fight it before running to the doctor. Here are some of the most effective diaper rash cures.

The first home cure for diaper rash is warm water and air. In most of the cases diaper rash appears because your baby's skin has been damp and not aerated for a long time. The usual scenario is that you use plastic or rubber diaper pants and when your baby damps them the moisture has no way out. Clean your baby with warm water only and leave it with no diapers as long as you can. Some mothers even leave their children like this for the whole day and put on diapers only during the night.

Some diaper rashes are caused by the cosmetics you use to clean you bay. Try to use only trusted cosmetics and make sure they are alcohol and perfume free. The same rule applies to the laundry detergents you use to wash your baby clothes. Obviously you should wash the baby's clothes separately using only suitable detergents.

A great home cure for diaper rash is the Cornstarch. You can mix it with the crème you are applying to your baby's bottom or use it in place of the powder. Another home cure is the vinegar. Clean your baby's bottom using a cotton ball dipped in vinegar; add some to the water used to rinse its bottom.

There are many more natural ways to keep your child healthy and happy. No matter how you are fighting a diaper rash you should be alert during all the time and know when to seek medical attention. Some rashes are easily cured with simple things such as better hygiene routine. However some rashes can be very consistent and turn into a real problem. Children's clothing evolved as with all the things that are now present today.

From the beginning, children's' clothing used color to separate the genders. Especially in the olden days where little boys looked like little girls, the distinction can be made by the color of the clothes. Girls wore pink and little boys wore blue, this is as much true today as it is in the era of days gone by.

Because of historical accounts available like painting and photographs, it was not easily distinguished if a child was male or female. Thus, not only do the clothes determined the gender but the general appearance as well. This was manifested by the hair style that they were told to wear. It became a strong convention that little girls wear pretty dresses and their hair long while the little boys were told to wear the pants and sport short hair. However due to the evolution of time, little girls of today have adopted to wearing pants but the day hasn't come yet where the boys adopted the dresses of girls!

In our modern world today, a general convention exists that girls are able to wear the clothes of boys but never the other way around. But that wasn't the case in the 19th century where little girls and boys were dressed alike. Although during that time, girls were not allowed to dress in pants, otherwise, there was not much difference in the way they were dressed.

Up to the time of the second world war, clothes associated with girls were dresses, pantalets, smocks and pinafores.

Dresses

This was the basic clothing of girls up to the second world war since it was not everyday occurrence that girls wore pants or shorts before the war.

Bloomers

This was another staple in the little girls' clothing where it served its purpose of
providing an alternative option to the restrictive and binding fashion sense during the 19th century. This can be attributed to Amelia Bloomer born 1818 - 1894 who was an American reformer espousing this cause. But the bloomer concept must be credited to Elizabeth Smith Miller as she was creator of the bloomers. Although this type of garment did not bloom at all.

Rompers

These were worn both by the girls and boys that were used primarily for play time. By the end of the second world war, rompers were basic staples for little girls wardrobe. They were usually used as costumes or uniforms for gym classes of girls.

Smocks

This is one generic children's clothing of years gone by. As this was so common, different styles, accessories, adornments, and other details filled the repertoire of how a smock can look like. There were smocks of different colors, smocks with different buttoning styles - buttons located at the back, in the front, or on the side. There were also smocks with collars, with trims, with ties, with pockets, with belts, etc. It was usual in the 1950s that smocks of identical cut were bought by mothers for their children.

Pinafores

This was a very essential piece of garment for the girls' wardrobe as they were usually worn by little girls of Europe and America.

Pantalets

These were worn both by boys and girls. Usually, boys wore plain pantalets while girls wore the fancier ones. But there were some boys who like to wear fancy Pantalets too.

Sailor suits

This was basically a boy's garment but it became a unisex garment as girls started to wear sailor suits too.

A Parents Guide to Toilet Training (Potty Training)

Toilet or potty training can be a frustrating time for parents and toddlers. My wife and I are getting to the end of toilet training with our son, but I wish we had prepared a bit earlier to make the process easier for all of us.

Most children learn to begin their bladder and later their bowels, between two to three years of age. Girls often before boys. Most parents, (well at least my wife and I!) only really start to think about toilet training when their child reaches around two.

But there's a lot of preparation that can be done before this age to make a child feel comfortable and acclimatized to the idea of going to the toilet before the experience begins.

Discuss with your child when they need to go to the toilet. "Are you doing a wee? Are you doing a poo?" Teach them through encouragement to tell you when they are emptying their bladders or moving their bowels.

Nappy time is ideal for these discussions. "You've done a poo. Soon you will go to the toilet to wee and poo like a big boy/girl." Talk about it weeks or months before putting them on the toilet.

• Read stories and watch children's programs or DVD's about toilet training (such as Elmo's Potty Time)


• Let them watch adults or older siblings when they go to the toilet and see that it is a natural and regular occurrence.


• Let the flush the toilet


• buy a special seat and foot stool for the toilet and sink so they feel safe and are able to easily wash their hands afterwards.

Around the the age of two your child should be well prepared and able to sit on the toilet at every nappy change. At first it's usually quite easy as they enjoy the thrill of being a big boy or girl. After the excitement wears off it can be hard to encourage them to sit.

Praise them for sitting on the toilet, regardless of their success. Give them a clap, a cheer a high five, stamp or sticker everytime they sit on the toilet, no matter how briefly. Then put them back in a nappy (reuse the same nappy if dry), then follow the toileting routine of using a small amount of paper, flushing the toilet and washing hands.

Praise them in front of others about how grown up they are for sitting on the toilet. They love that! Our son loved to show visitors how he could sit on the toilet all by himself.

To encourage success while they're on the toilet, they'll need to spend some time there at first. It's a good idea to keep a little basket of books in the bathroom so you can sit and read to them while they're sitting there. That first wee in the toilet is a big deal to parent and child!

Put them on the toilet at normal "go" times, such as after waking up, after meals, before a bath and before bed.

After sufficient preparation (weeks or months depending on the child), they will start to show signs of toilet readiness. Tugging at nappies, sometimes with words, stamping of feet etc. Now is the time for training pants.

To begin with take them to the toilet every hour. Don't give them the option by asking them, just tell them, "It's toilet time," and take them by the hand. Sooner or later most two year olds begin to object when they realise they have to stop playing for a little while to go to the toilet. At this time, don't let them leave the toilet until they've sat down and "performed". They know what to do by now. Encourage them by saying things like "As soon as you've weed we can go and draw, play with your favourite toy etc."

Be positive and praise small successes. Accidents happen. Don't scold them. Talk to them and say "Whoops, you peed on the floor. We pee in the toilet don't we? Next time we'll make it to the toilet." You can also encourage them to tell you when they need to go. After accidents complete the usual toilet routine - sit on the toilet, paper, flush and wash hands. If they don't go through the routine they'll soon see the advantages of peeing in their pants.

Once your child is in pants during the day, don't go back to nappies except for sleep periods. It is too confusing to children to work out when they're in a nappy and when they're in pants. After an accident, it's back into pants. Sorry!

Of course there are times when pants aren't convenient. Huggies "pull ups" are great for going out when toilet training. Don't use them like a nappy. But they offer peace of mind in case children don't make it to the toilet in time.

To limit accidents while out:

• take your child to the toilet before every outing


• take your child to the toilet between shops


• take a potty with you in the car for emergencies


• take spare clothes with you.

The hourly routine must still be maintained while you're out.

Most children will wet the bed at night long after they're dry during the day. Keep them in nappies at night and take them to the toilet as soon as they wake up.

Consistency between home and day care or other carers is very important. Remember to be positive and delight in your child's every success. Best of luck and I hope this guide will help you through this sometimes challenging process!

This comes hand in hand then with the additional ability to be able to increase the interval between voids. When you notice that your child is dry at longer intervals (ie dry after a nap or for at least 2 hours) and is voiding large amounts at a time, then that is a sign that your child may be physiologically ready for toilet training. Another component, which overlaps with psychological readiness, is the ability of your child to recognize that she is voiding (ie if your child does not recognize when she is voiding, toilet training is virtually impossible). 3. Ruin Your Cloth Nappies by Always Tumble Drying them on a Hot Cycle.

Your tumble dryer is a great boon in the colder months, on those rainy days when your things simply won't dry out on the line. However, they are energy-heavy, and if you always dry your nappies on a hot cycle, this can damage your nappies. Instead, run them through an extra spin cycle on the washer first - this can reduce drying time by 25% just by removing more water in the first place. Then favour the warm cycle, and even chuck in something dry - yet another way of speeding up the drying process while reducing energy use.
